Batik///

Batik is an ancient art form of patterning fabric using hot wax and dyes. The basic premise is that once hot wax permeates an area of fabric, it becomes impenetrable to dye. An artist must begin by applying the lightest dyes to the fabric and sealing the areas intended to remain that color with hot wax. Progressively darker colors follow until the piece is complete and all wax is removed to reveal the design. My approach to batik is not entirely traditional in that I primarily use brushes to apply wax and I do not submerge my fabric in dye baths. I batik on silk for more painterly results.
